Windy Day at Wittenham Clumps
Artist’s notes: Wittenham Clumps painted in January; fast moving, high cloud passing overhead. Favoured by artists for centuries this particular view has now taken on another level of historic significance as it depicts three towers of Didcot Power Station viewed in the background - These remaining towers were demolished in the summer of the same year, 2019.
“When in April the sweet showers fall and pierce the drought of March to the root, and all the veins are bathed in liquor of such power as brings about the engendering of the flower … so nature pricks them, and their heart engages, then people long to go on pilgrimages.”
— Geoffrey Chaucer, The Prologue Canterbury Tales c.1386
